Buddy-reading The Blade Itself with Lynn

The lovely Lynn of Lynn’s Books and I have been buddy-reading again (the best medicine for blogging block I’ve yet found), and we invite you to read our musings, squeaks of surprise and mutterings of foreboding as we tackle the first book in Abercrombie’s First Law trilogy, The Blade Itself.  If you’ve come here first, you will find below the second half of our epic discussion. For the first half please visit Lynn’s blog here. If you’re visiting after having read the first half there, then hello! welcome! and enjoy!   So, to continue where we left off… (and with a massive … Continue reading Buddy-reading The Blade Itself with Lynn

Buddy Reading A Man Lies Dreaming with the Curious SFF Reader

This has been my favourite buddy read yet with The Curious SFF Reader, Maryam, not because A Man Lies Dreaming was a fun read (as you will see), but because it gave us so much to talk about. I always know I can rely on Maryam for thought-provoking and insightful reviews, and this is even more true when we buddy-read together. So this is where to start with our conversation, then, when you’re done here, head on over to Maryam’s blog for the second half of our discussion. Let’s dive in, shall we? Maryam, you’ve read more of Tidhar’s work. … Continue reading Buddy Reading A Man Lies Dreaming with the Curious SFF Reader

Buddy Reading Lovecraft Country with the Curious SFF Reader

Maryam the Curious SFF Reader and I did another buddy-read, yay! This time we read Matt Ruff’s Lovecraft Country together and found plenty to talk about (although I suspect this is as much to do with how much I enjoy chatting with Maryam as it is because this was an interesting read). The first half of our resulting conversation can be found over at Maryam’s site here, and that’s definitely where you need to start if you’ve found yourself here first. If you’re visiting here having already read the first half, then hi! And welcome. So, to continue where we … Continue reading Buddy Reading Lovecraft Country with the Curious SFF Reader

Buddy Reading A Darker Shade of Magic with Lynn

Not long ago, Lynn and I read Schwab’s A Darker Shade of Magic together and agreed that Wyrd and Wonder would be a great time to post our discussion, and so here it is. For anyone who doesn’t know Lynn (and I am side-eying you vehemently) she is an awesome blogger, one of the very first I started following and responsible for a goodly wedge of my TBR, both stacks and lists. She also takes part in SPFBO every year and has done since the beginning I believe, which is no mean feat and gives you just a hint of … Continue reading Buddy Reading A Darker Shade of Magic with Lynn

Buddy Reading Daughter of the Forest with Lynn

Daughter of the Forest by Juliet Marillier has been on my tbr book stack for soooo long and honestly, if Lynn from over at Lynn’s Books hadn’t agreed to buddy-read it with me, it’d still be there now. I knew I wanted to read more of Marillier’s books, but just didn’t have the gumption. I recommend buddy-reading wholeheartedly to anyone who needs a little added motivation. The first half of our conversation can be found over on Lynn’s site here and that’s definitely where you should start. If you’ve come here from over there, then hi! and welcome. Nice of … Continue reading Buddy Reading Daughter of the Forest with Lynn

Buddy Reading Do You Dream of Terra-Two? with the Curious SFF Reader

Maryam the Curious SFF Reader and I did a buddy-read of Do You Dream of Terra-Two? by Temi Oh earlier this year and had such a lot of fun! Maryam was the perfect person to read this book with. The first half of our resulting conversation can be found over on Maryam’s site here, and that’s definitely where you need to start if you’ve come here first. If you’ve found your way here from there, then hi! and welcome. So, to continue from where we left off, and with a warning that there are SPOILERS ahead …   How did you feel … Continue reading Buddy Reading Do You Dream of Terra-Two? with the Curious SFF Reader

Temeraire by Naomi Novik

I had a great time buddy-reading this with the lovely Alex over at Spells and Spaceships, and you can find his thoughts on Temeraire here. While this wasn’t a perfectly-timed read for Alex, it was just what I needed. I agree with him that this is a book to curl up with, and I was lucky enough to be able to do just that over a long weekend during this fast-receding summer. So, I’m afraid I’m going to be that most annoying of things (again): the super-enthused and bouncy book fan. You have been warned. If you’re after a balanced, … Continue reading Temeraire by Naomi Novik

Buddy reading Broken Monsters by Lauren Beukes with Little Red Reviewer

So, Andrea of The Little Red Reviewer and I did this buddy read together (so much fun!!), which means you’ll find the first half of our discussion on her site, which is where I’d advise you to start. If you’ve found your way over here from there, then hello and welcome!   How would you categorise this book, if at all? Mayri: So this is my question, because it bothered me all the way through the book. On one hand, it’s a police procedural. On the other, a sort of Clive Barker-ish supernatural horror. I don’t even know how to … Continue reading Buddy reading Broken Monsters by Lauren Beukes with Little Red Reviewer
