Flying Witch (volumes 7 & 8) by Chihiro Ishizuka

This week has very much been about me trying to get my head around things. Things in the world, things at work, things in my personal life – not one of the concentric circles the represents life as I know it has remained untouched. As a result, reading hasn’t really happened. Pages have been turned, words have been seen, but … nothing’s really gone in. My fallback has been Ishizuka’s Flying Witch. The gentle humour and charm of this manga series continues to capture my imagination with its beautiful pen work and its focus on the small details of everyday … Continue reading Flying Witch (volumes 7 & 8) by Chihiro Ishizuka

Girls’ Last Tour by Tsukumizu

So as some of you know there’s this odd little sub-genre of manga called iyashikei or ‘healing’ manga, which I kind of stumbled across when I started reading the Flying Witch series by Chihiro Ishizuka about a year ago. This type of manga is characterised by an episodic structure, little to no drama or conflict and a general appreciation of the things in life that we often take for granted, like the natural world, good food and friendship. I can go on until the cows come home about how much I’m loving Flying Witch, but I have just finished … Continue reading Girls’ Last Tour by Tsukumizu

Flying Witch (volumes 5 & 6) by Chihiro Ishizuka

Tomorrow the month of Wyrd and Wonder begins! I am stupidly excited about it and have even managed to book a couple of days off so I can attempt to keep up with all the awesome stuff that’s going on. I’m going to try my hand at the daily Instagram prompts, I’ve got some exciting stuff lined up to read and I am totally psyched for the group read-a-long of Jen Williams’ The Ninth Rain. My cloak is newly laundered, my pointy hat is freshly starched, and so as a gentle limbering up exercise I thought I’d dip back into … Continue reading Flying Witch (volumes 5 & 6) by Chihiro Ishizuka

Flying Witch (volumes 3 & 4) by Chihiro Ishizuka

It’s a gorgeous, sunny PM here and that lovely afternoon quiet has descended on our little corner of the world for the time being. I don’t feel like catching up on the housework (let’s face it, I’m never going to be caught up on the housework), I don’t feel like sanding down the woodwork as I planned to do. Instead I’ve been rereading the next two volumes of Ishizuka’s Flying Witch (I wrote about volumes 1 and 2 here) and wallowing … luxuriating, even … in the harmless, peaceful, adorable world of Makoto and her friends. I have only … Continue reading Flying Witch (volumes 3 & 4) by Chihiro Ishizuka

Flying Witch (volumes 1 & 2) by Chihiro Ishizuka

I am in love with this manga series. It is about Makoto, a trainee witch, who, just like Kiki in the Studio Ghibli movie Kiki’s Delivery Service, has reached the age at which she must go out into the world and start living independently. She moves to rural Aomori to live with her cousins Kei and Chinastu and their parents. She goes to school as normal, but the rest of her time is spent hanging out with her cousins and friend Nao, and working on her witchiness. She has a broom and she can fly, she has a small plot … Continue reading Flying Witch (volumes 1 & 2) by Chihiro Ishizuka
