My Wyrd & Wonder wind down … or, how I did with that bingo challenge in the end

Wyrd and Wonder is always such a blast and this year has been no different – I’ve made some new friends, read swathes of awesome posts by awesome people (and I’m still catching up), and seen my TBR list double in size (yet again) – what more could a book blogger want? Maybe only a book bingo. Which one of our three most excellent hosts, imyril, provided, and which I possibly spent a disproportionate amount of time agonising over. Because, you know, lists and achievements are how I work. So I did some extracurricular reading – crammed into lunch … Continue reading My Wyrd & Wonder wind down … or, how I did with that bingo challenge in the end

Throne of Jade by Naomi Novik

It’s Wyrd and Wonder month! Hurrah hurray! I want magic, I want dragons, I want all the fantastical things I can possibly get! I can’t wait to read about what everyone else is reading and get started on this year’s read-along title: The Bone Shard daughter by Andrea Stewart (join ussssss! It’s never too late). But to get in the mood it seems only fitting to begin with that most noble of beasts, representative of all things Fantasy the world over – the dragon. So I decided it was time to catch up with Laurence and Temeraire… After all … Continue reading Throne of Jade by Naomi Novik

2020 Progress Report

It’s an understatement to say that 2020 was a weird year, I know. In my own working world we closed our libraries in March not knowing when we were going to reopen. We were redeployed to the phones, calling the elderly and vulnerable first, then contact tracing later on. Right now I’m working shifts in a testing centre. Each lockdown and reopening has me more and more worried that this may be the slow death of libraries. Reading has, therefore, been a very welcome escape, as it has been for so many of us. And while nearly all of my … Continue reading 2020 Progress Report

Fun for Monday: Halloween Creatures Tag

I saw this tag done by the Orang-utan Librarian back in 2018 (before I was brave enough to do tags – can you imagine?!) Created by Anthony of Keep Reading Forward, I thought it’d be a fun one to do today to celebrate the start of the Wyrd and Wonder mini event Spooktastic Reads … Hurrah! Hurray! Let’s get spoopy!     Witch: A magical character or book At the risk of being repetitive and thus boring, the only answer I can give here is Zen Cho’s Sorcerer to the Crown and its sequel The True Queen. They’re magical books, with … Continue reading Fun for Monday: Halloween Creatures Tag

Temeraire by Naomi Novik

I had a great time buddy-reading this with the lovely Alex over at Spells and Spaceships, and you can find his thoughts on Temeraire here. While this wasn’t a perfectly-timed read for Alex, it was just what I needed. I agree with him that this is a book to curl up with, and I was lucky enough to be able to do just that over a long weekend during this fast-receding summer. So, I’m afraid I’m going to be that most annoying of things (again): the super-enthused and bouncy book fan. You have been warned. If you’re after a balanced, … Continue reading Temeraire by Naomi Novik

Fun for Monday: The Mid-Year Freak Out Tag

The Orang-utan Librarian did this tag last week and I’m jumping aboard because I wanna do a tag to cheer myself up (it’s a grumpy Sunday over here as I’m writing – I’ve no idea why). So what better way to do that than with a half-year (already?!) squeeing over books read and books still to read? Here we go …     Best Book You’ve Read So Far This Year   It’s between Sorcerer to the Crown by Zen Cho and This is How You Lose the Time War by Amal El-Mohtar and Max Gladstone. Don’t make me choose. … Continue reading Fun for Monday: The Mid-Year Freak Out Tag
