Read-along: The Bone Shard Daughter by Andrea Stewart (week 4)

Wow! I’ve never been so frustrated at the conclusion of a book! Cliffhangers are a killer (which is why backlist reading is sooo appealing, I hate to wait), and Stewart has left us (or maybe just me?) with more questions than answers. Which is handy, in one sense, as I’m providing this week’s prompts, but, phew, it’s made answering them difficult! So without further ado, let’s talk about the end of The Bone Shard’s Daughter.   GIANT SPOILERS TO FOLLOW – DO NOT PASS THIS POINT IF YOU’VE NOT READ THE BOOK …   …   Chapters 36 to end … Continue reading Read-along: The Bone Shard Daughter by Andrea Stewart (week 4)

Read-along: The Bone Shard Daughter by Andrea Stewart (week 3)

Sheesh! Some Things have been revealed this week! And while none of the many mysteries have been truly unravelled yet, we are starting to see shapes in the mist … the truth may be stranger (and way creepier) than we think. This week’s prompts have been provided by the awesome Lisa of Dear Geek Place, one of our three rather marvellous Wyrd and Wonder hosts. Schedule details for this read-along can be found here. Watch out for the SPOILERS, SPOILERS, SPOILERS!   Chapters 24 to 35 inclusive Sand appears to be organising something of a rebellion herself – but against … Continue reading Read-along: The Bone Shard Daughter by Andrea Stewart (week 3)

Read-along: The Bone Shard Daughter by Andrea Stewart (week 2)

We’ve very quickly reached the halfway point in The Bone Shard Daughter this week and I’m still not sure about most of my feelings. Puzzles and questions abound! Let’s see if we can untangle a few thoughts, at least. This week’s prompts have been set by imyril of There’s Always Room for One More, which is also where you should go for schedule details about this Wyrd and Wonder read-along. As ever, SPOILERS can be expected from here on out.   Chapters 12 to 23 inclusive Jovis has begun to show strange new strengths since escaping Deerhead Island. What do … Continue reading Read-along: The Bone Shard Daughter by Andrea Stewart (week 2)

Read-along: The Bone Shard Daughter by Andrea Stewart (week 1)

Before I start – I was so so jealous of all the people who received the B-E-A-U-tiful ARC copy of this book last year! I wanted to read it from the first moment I saw that elegant golden wave on its plain dark cover, not knowing anything about the story or the author, but just needing this book. When the Fantasy Hive did an interview with Andrea Stewart I was even more intrigued, so I am massively grateful that this was picked for this year’s Wyrd and Wonder read-along (about which all details can be found here). Just so you … Continue reading Read-along: The Bone Shard Daughter by Andrea Stewart (week 1)

Read-along: Kushiel’s Chosen by Jacqueline Carey (week 6)

It’s the end. Some plans come to fruition and some are thwarted, Phèdre keeps her vow to the goddess Asherat, Joscelin reminds us all of just how badass he can be and Melisande is faced yet again. Middle books are notoriously difficult to get right and maybe I’m side-eyeing some of Carey’s decisions in this final week’s reading, but ultimately I’m satisfied, and quite pleased to meet Phèdre’s official consort. So, without further ado, let’s talk about the end of Kushiel’s Chosen using the prompts provided by Lisa of Dear Geek Place. Links to other readers’ responses can be found … Continue reading Read-along: Kushiel’s Chosen by Jacqueline Carey (week 6)

Read-along: Kushiel’s Chosen by Jacqueline Carey (week 4)

A daring escape from the prison island of La Dolorosa! Rescued from near-death at sea by pirates! Taken as hostage to a secret island! It’s been a whirlwind ride for Phèdre this week and we’re pausing on a cliffhanger to take stock. Each week’s prompts, links to other readers’ responses and the reading schedule for this read-along can all be found on this Goodreads page here. It’s my turn to ask the questions for this segment, so let’s get going …   … but be warned, it’s SPOILERS all the way!   Week 4: Chapters 45 to 55 inclusive What … Continue reading Read-along: Kushiel’s Chosen by Jacqueline Carey (week 4)

Read-along: Kushiel’s Chosen by Jacqueline Carey (week 3)

This week we begin to explore a new part of Phèdre’s world as she arrives in La Serenissima. But our cocksure courtesan (*snorts laughter* sorry! couldn’t resist!) is only just getting into the swing of things – this is a place with its own gods, politics and drama – when she finds herself in a whole new heap of trouble and comes face to face with the dastardly Melisande once again … This weeks prompts are posed by the marvellous Zeezee of Zeezee with Books (who’s my go-to blogger for awesome book tags, just FYI). Each week’s prompts, links … Continue reading Read-along: Kushiel’s Chosen by Jacqueline Carey (week 3)

Read-along: Kushiel’s Chosen by Jacqueline Carey (week 2)

We’ve returned to Terre d’Ange, and to the court of Queen Ysandre, but there’s no time for sight-seeing as Phèdre packs her bags and sets sail for La Serenissima in pursuit of traitorous secrets. Who, if anyone, can be trusted in this game? Place your bets, ladies and gentleman, as we delve deeper into the world of Kushiel’s Chosen. This week’s prompts have been posed by that wisest of bookwyrms imyril of There’s Always Room for One More (who levelled up this week – please go wish her happy birthday if you haven’t already). Each week’s prompts, links to … Continue reading Read-along: Kushiel’s Chosen by Jacqueline Carey (week 2)

Read-along: Kushiel’s Chosen by Jacqueline Carey (week 1)

After the incredible introduction to Terre d’Ange that was the Kushiel’s Dart read-along in September last year we are finally returning to see how Phèdre and Joscelin are getting on and what new games are afoot in this angel-touched world. This will be another six-week Wyrd and Wonder read-along (because these books are chunky) being led by imyril of There’s Always Room for One More. Prompts are posted on this Goodreads page each week, along with links to everyone’s response posts and the reading schedule.   Before you read on, please be aware that there will be SPOILERS not only … Continue reading Read-along: Kushiel’s Chosen by Jacqueline Carey (week 1)

Read-along: Golden Witchbreed by Mary Gentle (Week 4)

After travelling the length and breadth of the land, playing the Orthean game of intrigue to the best of her ability, and surviving imprisonment, sickness and assassination attempts, Dominion envoy Christie is finally coming to the end of her stay on Orthe. Will her memories be fond? Has she made a good impression? Will she make it out alive? It’s the final week of the Golden Witchbreed read-along for SciFi Month, and we’re discussing part eight. And as we’re talking about the end here, I hope it’s obvious that this is as spoilery as it’s going to get! SPOILERS! SPOILERS! … Continue reading Read-along: Golden Witchbreed by Mary Gentle (Week 4)
