Read-along: Winter’s Orbit by Everina Maxwell (week 4)

After the revelations of last week everything has moved pretty fast in this final quarter of the SciFiMonth read-along and the Empire looks very different now. More importantly, Kiem and Jainan have finally worked each other out and have an exciting future ahead of them, both personally and politically. So without further ado, let’s tackle Lisa’s prompts for the concluding chapters of Winter’s Orbit.   SPOILERS BEYOND THIS POINT!   Week 4: Chapter 23 through to end We learn the truth of who was behind the fake remnants, the Kingfisher thefts, and Taam’s murder… What did you make of Aren … Continue reading Read-along: Winter’s Orbit by Everina Maxwell (week 4)

Read-along: Winter’s Orbit by Everina Maxwell (week 3)

There’s been survival drama and political drama this week, and more suspicious goings on than we can shake a stick at. Not to mention that final bombshell at the end of Chapter 22. Thank goodness for read-along prompts – brought to us this week by the awesome Ariana of the Book Nook, (one my favourite people!) – to help us order our thoughts and feelings. As mentioned in previous weeks, the schedule for this SciFiMonth read-along can be found here at Dear Geek Place, and the weekly prompts are posted on this Goodreads page here. SPOILERS from here on … Continue reading Read-along: Winter’s Orbit by Everina Maxwell (week 3)

Read-along: Winter’s Orbit by Everina Maxwell (week 2)

Last week we met newly-weds Kiem and Jainan and dipped our toes into the present situation on Iskat as the renewal of their treaty with the Resolution looms. This week we’re swimming in the political relationship between Iskat and Thea and the suspicious goings-on that all seem to come back to Jainan and his previous partner, Prince Taam. Interesting isn’t the word. The schedule for this SciFi Month read-along can be found here at Dear Geek Place, and the weekly prompts are posted on this Goodreads page here. This week imyril has provided the prompts to get us talking. Let’s … Continue reading Read-along: Winter’s Orbit by Everina Maxwell (week 2)

Read-along: Winter’s Orbit by Everina Maxwell (week 1)

It feels like forever since we did a read-along (it’s been five months) and I’m so glad our illustrious SciFi Month captains chose Winter’s Orbit by Everina Maxwell because it gave me the perfect excuse to get myself a copy (and, even better, read it in the same year of acquisition!). If you want more information about this most excellent read-along, you can find the schedule over at Dear Geek Place. Each week’s questions/prompts are being posted each Thursday on this Goodreads page here. And now, without further ado…   Week 1: Chapters 1 through 6 First up, introductions! … Continue reading Read-along: Winter’s Orbit by Everina Maxwell (week 1)

Read-along: The Bone Shard Daughter by Andrea Stewart (week 4)

Wow! I’ve never been so frustrated at the conclusion of a book! Cliffhangers are a killer (which is why backlist reading is sooo appealing, I hate to wait), and Stewart has left us (or maybe just me?) with more questions than answers. Which is handy, in one sense, as I’m providing this week’s prompts, but, phew, it’s made answering them difficult! So without further ado, let’s talk about the end of The Bone Shard’s Daughter.   GIANT SPOILERS TO FOLLOW – DO NOT PASS THIS POINT IF YOU’VE NOT READ THE BOOK …   …   Chapters 36 to end … Continue reading Read-along: The Bone Shard Daughter by Andrea Stewart (week 4)

Read-along: The Bone Shard Daughter by Andrea Stewart (week 3)

Sheesh! Some Things have been revealed this week! And while none of the many mysteries have been truly unravelled yet, we are starting to see shapes in the mist … the truth may be stranger (and way creepier) than we think. This week’s prompts have been provided by the awesome Lisa of Dear Geek Place, one of our three rather marvellous Wyrd and Wonder hosts. Schedule details for this read-along can be found here. Watch out for the SPOILERS, SPOILERS, SPOILERS!   Chapters 24 to 35 inclusive Sand appears to be organising something of a rebellion herself – but against … Continue reading Read-along: The Bone Shard Daughter by Andrea Stewart (week 3)

Read-along: The Bone Shard Daughter by Andrea Stewart (week 2)

We’ve very quickly reached the halfway point in The Bone Shard Daughter this week and I’m still not sure about most of my feelings. Puzzles and questions abound! Let’s see if we can untangle a few thoughts, at least. This week’s prompts have been set by imyril of There’s Always Room for One More, which is also where you should go for schedule details about this Wyrd and Wonder read-along. As ever, SPOILERS can be expected from here on out.   Chapters 12 to 23 inclusive Jovis has begun to show strange new strengths since escaping Deerhead Island. What do … Continue reading Read-along: The Bone Shard Daughter by Andrea Stewart (week 2)

Read-along: The Bone Shard Daughter by Andrea Stewart (week 1)

Before I start – I was so so jealous of all the people who received the B-E-A-U-tiful ARC copy of this book last year! I wanted to read it from the first moment I saw that elegant golden wave on its plain dark cover, not knowing anything about the story or the author, but just needing this book. When the Fantasy Hive did an interview with Andrea Stewart I was even more intrigued, so I am massively grateful that this was picked for this year’s Wyrd and Wonder read-along (about which all details can be found here). Just so you … Continue reading Read-along: The Bone Shard Daughter by Andrea Stewart (week 1)

Read-along: Kushiel’s Chosen by Jacqueline Carey (week 6)

It’s the end. Some plans come to fruition and some are thwarted, Phèdre keeps her vow to the goddess Asherat, Joscelin reminds us all of just how badass he can be and Melisande is faced yet again. Middle books are notoriously difficult to get right and maybe I’m side-eyeing some of Carey’s decisions in this final week’s reading, but ultimately I’m satisfied, and quite pleased to meet Phèdre’s official consort. So, without further ado, let’s talk about the end of Kushiel’s Chosen using the prompts provided by Lisa of Dear Geek Place. Links to other readers’ responses can be found … Continue reading Read-along: Kushiel’s Chosen by Jacqueline Carey (week 6)

Read-along: Kushiel’s Chosen by Jacqueline Carey (week 4)

A daring escape from the prison island of La Dolorosa! Rescued from near-death at sea by pirates! Taken as hostage to a secret island! It’s been a whirlwind ride for Phèdre this week and we’re pausing on a cliffhanger to take stock. Each week’s prompts, links to other readers’ responses and the reading schedule for this read-along can all be found on this Goodreads page here. It’s my turn to ask the questions for this segment, so let’s get going …   … but be warned, it’s SPOILERS all the way!   Week 4: Chapters 45 to 55 inclusive What … Continue reading Read-along: Kushiel’s Chosen by Jacqueline Carey (week 4)
