2021 Progress Report

2021 took the previous year’s weirdness and ran with it, I felt. It was also one of the most unfortunate years (IRL) I’ve encountered as we and our friends and family suffered ridiculously long runs of bad luck and calamity. I don’t know one person who isn’t glad to see the back of that year. Which meant that reading was even more important than usual, an escape and a comfort that got me through the last twelve months. That, along with blogging and chatting with you all has been the consistent bright spot in the deceptively deep pit that was … Continue reading 2021 Progress Report

Fun for Monday: Mid-Year Check-in Tag

This tag was loads of fun to do last year, but I nearly forgot all about it this year, what with one thing and another. Thankfully, I’ve seen it doing the rounds, so while I’m a bit late, I’m here now. Hi! I’m kind of in a weird place at the moment. I’ve been taking it easy on the bloggy front and trying to sort out some work things and some personal things that have me feeling … a little blue. I’m hoping talking about books will get me out of my funk and maybe get me excited for some … Continue reading Fun for Monday: Mid-Year Check-in Tag

My Wyrd & Wonder wind down … or, how I did with that bingo challenge in the end

Wyrd and Wonder is always such a blast and this year has been no different – I’ve made some new friends, read swathes of awesome posts by awesome people (and I’m still catching up), and seen my TBR list double in size (yet again) – what more could a book blogger want? Maybe only a book bingo. Which one of our three most excellent hosts, imyril, provided, and which I possibly spent a disproportionate amount of time agonising over. Because, you know, lists and achievements are how I work. So I did some extracurricular reading – crammed into lunch … Continue reading My Wyrd & Wonder wind down … or, how I did with that bingo challenge in the end

Buddy-reading A Darker Shade of Magic with Lynn

Not long ago, Lynn and I read Schwab’s A Darker Shade of Magic together and agreed that Wyrd and Wonder would be a great time to post our discussion, and so here it is. For anyone who doesn’t know Lynn (and I am side-eying you vehemently) she is an awesome blogger, one of the very first I started following and responsible for a goodly wedge of my TBR, both stacks and lists. She also takes part in SPFBO every year and has done since the beginning I believe, which is no mean feat and gives you just a hint of … Continue reading Buddy-reading A Darker Shade of Magic with Lynn

Fun for Monday: 7 SFF Books with Incredible Openings

The lovely Sam over at The Book in Hand does a fun thing most weekends called Sunday’s Seven and a couple of weeks ago she chose seven favourite openings from SFF books she’s read. Because sometimes you really are in or out depending on those first few sentences. As Sam has kindly given me permission to play along, here are my seven awesome opening lines, all from books I have yet to read:   The Redemption of Althalus by David & Leigh Eddings “In defense of Althalus, it should be noted that he was in very tight financial circumstances and … Continue reading Fun for Monday: 7 SFF Books with Incredible Openings

Vicious by V. E. Schwab

I am ashamed to say that this has been on my TBR pile for nearly five years, (guess which Book Bingo category I’m checking off this week, people!) and it feels like V E Schwab has exploded into popularity since then, (although I’m sure I’ve already mentioned that I am shockingly out of touch with, well, everything, so this is probably just me). When I first picked this book up I’d never heard of Schwab and couldn’t find anything else by her in the library or my nearest big book store. Now thanks to her recently completed Shades of Magic … Continue reading Vicious by V. E. Schwab
